NUT Meeting May 21, 2016 10:00 – 11:30 AM

Due to a scheduling conflict that we were made aware of when first working things out for meeting in the Club Room at Hy-Vee, our May meeting will be on Saturday, May 21, 2016 10:00 – 11:30 AM. This is the third Saturday in May.

Hy-Vee Club Room

5330 NW 64th Street
Kansas City, MO 64151
Store: 816-505-1311

We have a fantastic room to meet in, eat yummy food, and talk about technology.

The Nut meetings are a chance to get together with other people and talk about technology as it is related to those who are blind or low vision. This is not a structured group with officers, rules, bylaws or committees. Its just people getting together for good food and sharing information.

One of the things I am planning on demonstrating is grocery shopping online at Hy-Vee and getting groceries delivered. Its very easy and if your order is under $100 its just a $4.95 delivery fee.

This of course will not be the only topic of discussion. Bring your questions, problems, ideas along with yourself and maybe even a friend and join us.

If you have any questions, please contact me via any of the methods at the end of this message.

KCATA uses technology to improve services

As most of us know, through the use of IFTTT and the KCATA twitter site, people can find out about Share-A-Fare status changes due to inclement weather. The twitter site can also be useful when trying to communicate with SAF as Ruthie found out the day of the Royal’s parade.

But there is more. A few months ago there was a news segment about BRIDJ. In partnership with the KCATA, BRIDJ is an ap-based service that lets people schedule a passenger van to pick them up at their nearest bus stop. Passengers are then dropped at the bust stop nearest to their destination. The KCATA is also working on a system called IVR (Interactive Voice Response) which would let SAF passengers know if their ride will be late or even early. This system will be useful for everyone, especially for those of us who work at the IRS and have to wait outside for our rides to pick us up.

Lisa Womack KCATA Mobility Manager will be talking about these topics and more as well as answering questions at our next NFB Chapter meeting. You don’t need to be a member to come learn something new and ask questions. All interested parties are welcomed.

When: April 16, 2PM
Where: 118 Westport Road Second Floor (Westport Branch of the KC Public Library).

Hope to see you there!

Best Regards

Daniel Garcia

NUT Meeting April 9, 2016

The next NUT meeting will be this Saturday April 9 from 10:00 to 11:30 AM.

Hy-Vee Club Room
5330 NW 64th Street
Kansas City, MO 64151
Store: 816-505-1311

We will have a demonstration and discussion about adding calendar entries on a smartphone. This will include both Android and Ios devices.
We will also have a demonstration of using the remote add-on with NVDA to connect to another computer. This can be used to fix a problem for someone without needing to be in person, or even just showing someone how to do something on their computer.

As always, bring yourself and a friend, bring your questions and comments, and join us for a friendly discussion of technology.

Some people do arrive for general conversation just after 9, so don’t be afraid to show up early.

We have wonderful Hy-Vee employees that will go to the kitchen area and get food from the buffet or other food options from the kitchen.

If you need assistance in getting to the club room, just stop at Customer Service on your way in.

Everyone is welcome, there are no membership dues, pledges, secret handshakes, or loyalty songs to learn. Just people helping people.
